LAKELAND — Platform Art will unveil the design Sunday for a sculpture to be installed at Bonnet Springs Park, scheduled to open in 2020.
Platform Art will hold a “Sensory Salon” art party at 5 p.m. Sunday at 5075 Boy Scout Ranch Road in Bartow. The fundraising event is open to the public, and tickets are available for $50 each.
Platform Art, a nonprofit organization, launched the project in early 2019 in collaboration with All Saints Academy’s NuVu Innovation Studio. Students created and submitted designs representing the five senses, according to a news release from Platform Art.
The organization chose “The Sound Wall,” designed by student artists Laura Prazdnicane and Lucy Zhang, as the winning entry. It will be fabricated by Becky Ault and Mike Cunningham of ART Research Enterprises Inc.
“The Sound Wall” will feature a curved wall, to be covered in natural vines or plants, with a top section of gently falling bangles and rain tubes to feature the sense of sound, the release said.
Landscape architect Anna Cawrse of Sasaki Group, which is working with Bonnet Springs Park, will plan site-specific foliage for the sculpture. The park’s sensory garden will eventually include five sculptures, each representing a human sense.
Platform Art set a fundraising goal of $150,000 for the sound sculpture project. Grant funding is being pursued, but private philanthropy will be necessary to meet the goal, Platform Art Executive Director Cynthia Haffey said.
