SCAD celebrates 11th year of deFINE ART – News – DoSavannah – Google Alerts

Next week, the Savannah College of Art and Design will offer the Savannah community and their students a rare opportunity to meet and confer with established and emerging artists from nine different countries as the university presents its 11th annual deFINE ART exhibition.

“You can’t find this type of engagement and interaction with contemporary art and artists anywhere else in the Southeast,” said Kari Herrin, SCAD’s Executive Director of Museums and Exhibitions. “All of the events are free and open to the public, and by bringing international artists and their work to Savannah, we’re opening up people’s minds and eyes to new and diverse ideas they might not otherwise experience.”

Exposing local audiences to new, unfamiliar artists and themes lies at the heart of the deFINE ART exhibition.

“We’re immersing attendees in diverse perspectives and ideas as they experience thought-provoking exhibitions and events with international artists,” said Herrin. “We want attendees to be able to think more fully and deeply about the far-reaching impact of contemporary art on their everyday lives.”

“deFINE ART was created even before the SCAD Museum of Art was founded as a way to invigorate our communities,…with experiences that bring them together with international artists to engage in contemporary ideas and issues.”

While the exhibition has been going for over a decade now, Herrin assures us that no two deFINE exhibitions are ever the same.

“Each year we bring new and diverse artists together for exhibitions, performances, lectures, and master classes with students, and we often commission works that reflect the specificities of that contemporary moment,” Herrin added.

“We’re very excited to host trailblazing feminist artist Marilyn Minter as our keynote speaker and honoree this year, and our exhibitions offer a truly international view into the contemporary art world today, more than ever before.”
