He didn’t start out to be a journalist.
At any given time, Providence Journal photographer Sandor Bodo is carrying between one and three of his 10 cameras. Some are sophisticated models, others are point-and-shoots, but they all have helped him create incredible images.
Here, he talks about his circuitous path and his background. The interview is edited for length and clarity.
How did you come to be a photographer at The Journal?
I started as a lab technician when The Journal was introducing color to the paper. Before then, it was all black and white. They needed experience in color processing, and I worked at a place called Color Lab, where they did color processing.
So you didn’t come from a journalism background?
No, I come from a fine-arts background. I’m an art spy. The journalism I’ve learned from my colleagues over the years.
How did you come to be out in the field?
When I was a lab tech, I would come up with ideas and pitch them. I had photographic skills. I was taking pictures myself for other things, and freelancing. When I pitched ideas, they would say, “Why don’t you go do that?” And I would. I ended up doing several projects a year as a non-staff photographer.
The first wave of buyouts shook loose a photographic spot and I was encouraged to apply for it by my boss, Michael Delaney. It was not a strategy I had, because I was told when I was hired this was not a track to being a staff photographer.
As someone who started as a lab tech processing photos in a darkroom, how did you feel about the switch to digital photography?
I was fine with it. I’m not a purist. The essence of photography is really the making of the image. It’s not whether you use chemicals, or it’s digital, or what kind of camera it is. It’s capturing how you see it, and whether it moves somebody or means something to somebody else.
