The first of several murals planned on the West Side is now complete.
Philadelphia artist Evan Lovett and his assistant Jake Taylor painted a mural titled “Below the Surface” on the east wall of the Empire Arcades building at 509 Main St. to launch the West Side Mural Revitalization Project.
The mural features two native species of turtles — a red-eared slider and a painted turtle swimming in a pool of bright aqua-colored water.
The mural projects are organized by the Street Art Society NEPA, a local nonprofit that formed last year. The society received a $50,000 Local Share Account grant, funded from casino taxes, toward the project that includes 10 murals to be painted in Kingston, Edwardsville and Luzerne. Additional funding is needed, especially because the nonprofit can only draw down grant funds after money is spent and receipts are provided to the grant administrator.
