ART AFTER DARK: Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave., 5-8 p.m. Art After Dark is back on Thursday, September 12 from 5 – 8 pm. DESIGNxRI and the Newport Art Museum welcome “tools for the imagination” designer Cas Holman for a hands-on community playdate and designer presentation kicking off DESIGN WEEK RI 2019. Guests will collaborate on a giant Rigamajig contraption on the lawn constructed out of Holman’s award winning Rigamajig toy/tool parts, and then learn about Cas Holman’s career, projects, and design philosophy. Guests will also be invited to join a Guided Preview Tour of the Museum’s upcoming exhibit Forever Young: Representations of Childhood and Adolescence. BEHIND THE DESIGN: Whitehorne House Museum, 416 Thames St., Newport, 5-7 p.m. The Newport Restoration Foundation presents Behind the Design: A Craftsman’s Tour of Newport Furniture. Furniture maker Timothy Philbrick will give a tour through the Whitehorne House Museum highlighting 18th-century Newport furniture. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the tour begins at 5:15. Tickets are $25.


SILENT BOOK CLUB: Newport Public Library, 300 Spring St., Newport, at 3:45 p.m. SBC is a chance for teens to relax for an hour, read whatever they want, and enjoy a few snacks. No registration required. 847-8720, Ext. 206, or email

ART SHOW: The Portsmouth Art Guild, 2679 East Main Road, Portsmouth, 6-8 p.m. The Portsmouth Art Guild will host an opening reception for the Memories of New England Art Show at the Guild Gallery. There will be featured works in a range of media and from a variety of artists, including ones from Rhode Island. Light refreshments will be served.
