Ex-treasurer, arts center thief faces new charges | Local News – Google Alerts

NEWBURY — A man whose theft of more than $100,000 from a nonprofit community arts center in Byfield put the program out of business in the mid-2000s is now facing new larceny charges.

David Takesian, 52, of Hampton, New Hampshire, was charged last week by Winchester police with two counts of felony larceny from a disabled or elderly person, stemming from allegations that he took money from an office on Church Street in that town.

Takesian allegedly took funds on two different dates, June 29 and July 7, while working in the same building, according to a spokeswoman for the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

He was arrested Thursday in New Hampshire and scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn District Court Friday on the charges. After that, he’s expected to appear in Salem Superior Court to answer to a probation violation warrant.

Takesian, who had previously lived in Byfield, is still on probation for the theft of more than $107,000 from the Yellow School Center for the Arts, a program that was housed in the former Byfield Elementary School on Central Street.

Prosecutors said that over a two-year period, from June 2004 until July 2006, Takesian, who served as treasurer for the organization, used checks drawn on the nonprofit’s bank account to pay his own expenses, including mortgage, insurance and credit card payments, and for personal expenses. A prosecutor said at Takesian’s sentencing that he used it as “his personal playground.”

“His actions, for all intents and purposes, killed this organization,” First Assistant District Attorney John Dawley said at Takesian’s 2008 sentencing on larceny and making false entries in corporate books. He was sentenced to two years in jail, followed by 10 years of probation.
