James Honeycutt has fond early memories of drawing.
“I remember going to my Nana’s house, and she always had a giant box of crayons,” he said. “She would have me draw different things around the house. I was the kid that would doodle on the back of my school work during class.
“I credit my mom and Nana for my artistic ability. They would always have me doing something with art.”
Now, Honeycutt is known around the Detroit area and beyond for his vibrant, detailed and delightful caricature drawings. The Riverview man and Dearborn Heights native has drawn everyone from local media personalities to famous rock stars.
His drawings have made such an impact that superstar musicians and bands, such as The Rolling Stones and Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue, have shared his artwork on their social media accounts.
Even though Honeycutt started creating art at a young age, he strayed away from it when adulthood hit.
“I started a family at a young age and focused on raising my kids,” the 48-year-old said. “One day, years later, I found out that one of my sons suffered from addiction. It was devastating and the hardest thing that my family has had to deal with.
“I needed an outlet and a way to cope, and one day, I picked up a pencil and started drawing. It was kind of a therapeutic a way to escape, if only for a little while.”
